How to Change a Front Wheel Bearing on Your Car
Changing front wheel bearings is not a particularly tough job. As long as the race is not scored, the worst part of the job is getting plenty of grease into the bearing. Most of the time, you know that a front wheel bearing is starting fail because of a high pitched whine coming from the front end. This whine is generally not as loud and obnoxious as the brake pad indicator when the brake pads are getting worn. You will need the new bearing and a small amount of axle grease (the kind that has the consistency of a gel). Start the job by heading to the auto parts store and buy the replacement bearing. These are not too expensive. Along with the bearing, pick up some axle grease. You can get this in a tube or a can. It is the same stuff. So, it is up to you how to buy it. If you do not have a good supply of rags or shop towels, get some of those, too. The paper kind work alright if you prefer them. Jack the front wheel off of the ground. You will need to lift the wheel that will receive the new bearing off of the ground. It is not a bad idea to put a stand under the car on that side for it to rest on. When you are certain that the car is stable, remove the hub cap and the dust cover. The dust cover is the small dome-shaped cap that covers the end of your front axle. The job gets somewhat dirty at this point. You may choose to wear gloves, but most mechanics prefer to be able to feel with their fingers without the gloves in the way. Make a note of the positioning of the nut that is screwed onto the axle. When the dust cover is off, you will see a large nut with a pin going through one of the slots along its upper edge. There are usually several holes in the threaded shaft that the nut is on. Count the number of holes before the one that the pin passes through. This is normally the one that you will tighten the nut back to before inserting the pin. This nut is not tight. A pair of channel locks or pliers should do to remove it once you have removed the pin. Screw the nut off and store it and the pin for later. When you remove the nut and pin, it is a good idea to store them in the dust cap or hub cap. Grip your tire on each edge and work it back and forth from side to side. You will see the large washer that was behind the nut pop out on the axle. Slide this off and put it with nut and pin. Slide the tire and wheel off of the axle. The bearing should come with it and still be inside the hub on the back of the wheel. Inspect the axle for damage. It is rare that the axle will be damaged by the bearing. If it has been driven for a long time with a bad bearing, you may have to replace the axle. Clean the axle so that it will be easy to inspect. Turn your tire and wheel and lay the tire flat on the ground with the back side up. You should be able to look inside and see the old bearing. Try to pull the bearing out of the hub. Two Wheels and some Good Luck
Exploring Mexico via bicycle is not something I would recommend to everybody. In fact, it would probably be smartest just to discourage or advise strongly against it; no liability issues to deal with later. However, there will always be some who like things their own way and if it involves a long distance bike trip they will undertake it, no matter where. There is always enough time to worry about troubles as they come up. If you think that the best way to visit Mexico is an all inclusive deal at a five star resort that you will only leave for hours at a time using guided tours and the like, then this article is not for you. Those with an open mind however might find some useful advice here. Everything I am writing about is first hand experience. I have entered Mexico by bicycle at the beginning of December 2009, after a month long trip from Orlando, FL and cycled on via Matamoros to Veracruz. From there I have done a tour into the Mountains via Xalapa, Perotte and ventured into the State of Puebla before returning to Veracruz via Codova. Here are the key experiences and points to consider: 1) Crossing the Border When I first entered Mexico last December I had no idea what to expect. The only information I had was from wildly exaggerated crime stories that somebody had heard from somebody else who had seen it on the news. If all of these tales would have turned out to be true I’d probably not be writing this today. I crossed the Border from Brownsville, Texas into Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Other crossings should be very similar. First there was a toll bridge to cross. I honestly don’t remember how much the toll was exactly. It is best to have a couple of quarters and dimes ready to avoid the hassle of changing large bills. As soon as you’re leaving the toll booth there are customs booths, they seem to be just for cars though. A uniformed guard waved me aside right away to ask questions about the purpose, destination and duration of my trip. The next step was to find a suitable place to lock up the bike, a guard rail in my case, then go inside the customs building and obtain a tourist visa. It was nothing more than filling out a form at one counter and then paying a $ 20 fee at another. Of course it helps a great deal to know some Spanish as the border guards do not necessarily speak English. It is also important to keep the tourist visa together with your passport. There are other checkpoints further down the road where officials check for it. The real adventure started as soon as I stepped out of the customs building. After unlocking my bicycle I spotted a “tourist guide” in uniform that was already aggressively waving to get my attention. “Great” I thought, “he would probably have a map.” As it turned out he did not. He actually tried desperately to appear trust worthy, pointing at his badge repeatedly while talking to convince me to let him guide me through the city with his car. Actually the truth is that if you use the right products and a proper technique, you can get your wheels looking like new in just a few minutes. There are two very important rules: Don’t clean the wheels when they are hot! Just let them cool down, because hot metal and chemicals don’t mix well. Also keep them out of direct sunlight. Only ever clean one wheel at a time. The very first thing before you start is to give them a spray with the hose. It won’t remove much dirt but it will soften it up. Spray the wheels with special spray for alloy wheels that remove the brake dust and agitate with a brush. There are special brushes on the market to do this. It is agitation caused by brushing which breaks down the static that causes the dirt to stick to the wheels in the first place.  Don’t allow the solution to be in contact with your wheels for more than a minute. As soon as you can, thoroughly rinse the wheel with lots of clean water. If you have missed some areas, you can go round again.  To remove any excess moisture one the wheels are clean, use an absorbent synthetic chamois. The problem with shiny clean wheels, though, is that they have an annoying tendency to get dirty again.
